Hairdressing, Dog and Animal Grooming, Scissors

The Anatomy of a Pair of Scissors

Hairdressing / Dog Grooming Scissor Diagram

4. Tension

Adjust the Knob, dial or screw to get the correct tension, to be sure you have the correct Tension, do the following:-

  • Hold your scissors by the thumb ring with your left hand with the scissors facing upright in a 12 o’clock position.
  • With your right hand, take the finger ring and open the blades to a 45-degree angle. Let go of the ring and let the scissors close by themselves.
  • When the blades close, there should be approximately 0.5 inches between them, and if there’s any more or less, the scissors might need tensioning.
  • To tighten turn the Knob, dial or screw 'clockwise.

6. Hollow Ground

Both the convex and semi convex scissors will have a hollow grind. Running from the cutting edge to the back of the blade, which is  concave or hollowed-out. This reduces friction when the scissors are closing, reducing the force needed to cut, which helps the edge to last longer.

There are three main types of screws and tension systems: Regular Screws, Thumb Screws, and UFO Screws.

Scissor Maintenance

Picture of the correct way to oil a pair of scissors

General Maintenence

After use clean dry the  apply oil around the pivot area ideally every day..

If possible try not to drop them as this can damage

Tension

Maintaining the correct tension for your scissors, will extend the life of the scissor, this is done via the Pivot or Tension Screw, ideally every week.

Storage

Store your dog grooming scissors closed and in a protective case, a padded scissors wallet or wrap to prevent them from any unnecessary damage. Ideally in a cool, dry place away from any contact with chemicals, dust or humidity.

Things to look out for!

These are signs that maintenance may be needed.

Are your scissors .......

  1. bending not cutting - adjust the tension if this fails they may need re-sharpening.
  2.   Pinching or pulling - the cutting edge may have a nick - maybe due to being dropped.
  3.  making a crunching noise or has difficulty closing - again the scissor may need re-sharpening or the blade / handle bending back into place
  4.  are feeling dull soon after sharpening - then they may not have been sharpened correctly

Types of Scissor Blade Cutting Edge

Bevelled Edged

Semi-Convex Edge

Semi-Convex Edge

Diagram of the bevel edge on a scissor

A bevel edge, or German edge, is extremely durable. The edge is not as sharp as a convex edge, but the angle of the edge allows for greater longevity. Bevel edged shears are great for blunt cutting but are not suitable for more advanced cutting techniques or finishing work.

Semi-Convex Edge

Semi-Convex Edge

This type of edge is very similar to a convex edge, but the blades are sharpened at a lesser degree. These shears are extremely versatile and can be used for everyday cutting and finish work.

Convex Edge

Convex Edge

Diagram of the blade of a convex scissor

A convex edge is the sharpest, finest edge you can get on any shear and is best used for finishing work. All convex edge shears will have a hone or ride line which give a smooth cut without any blade noise. Lower quality metals cannot hold this type of edge, so they are usually made from higher quality metals.
